Main Trunk Line

A QUIET SNUB.

Lpeh press association.] Wellington August 9. A deputation consisting of Messrs Fergus, McLean. Bruce, Fisher, Duthie, Taipua and Dr Newman waited on the Hon. Mr Seddon this afternoon, asking him to let the contract for the construction of the Makohine Viaduct, on the North Island main trunk line. The members of the deputation pointed out that the country which would be opened up by the construction of this work was exceedingly rich, and would be doubtless taken up by special settlement associations as soon as the line was finished. Settlement was going on beyond the proposed viaduct, and it was urged the work might be completed even if the trunk line was afterwards gone on with in another direction. It was also pointed out that there was already a number of miles of railway constructed beyond the viaduct which would be absolutely useless until the viaduct itself was completed. In reply, the Minister said there was some difficulty in regard to the Government acquiring the Awarua Block, and they were not in a position to deal with it. In his opinion the country should be settled before the railway was made. The presentation of the deputation, however, would be laid before the Government, and in preparing the Public Works Statement he would endeavour to do justice to every part of the colony. Cobbe and Darragh are at present clearing out a big lot of sample and " Job " Corsets much under ordinary prices ; they are also offering a large stock of slightly tossed Underclothing at reduced rates. — Advt. Special attention is directed to the CoOp. Co.'s advertisement in this issue. Great bargains in ulsters, furs, underclothing, pinnafores, $c. are notified. The company has received a splendid assortment of vegetable and flower seeds, the I growth of which is guaranteed.-— Advi.
