Ashurst Notes

| FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT, i The Rev. J. M. Devenish preached his first sermons in the Anglican Church on Sunday last to large congregations. In the evening the church was filled to overflowing. Just as we all expected, that in tbe advent of a curate the building would be too small. Mr Adsett informs me that he is prepared to give all the timber required foi the strains and decking of the proposed suspension bridge over the Pohangina, and also the wire rope at present used foi the cage. The river bed is about 4 chains across where the cage is now set up. The idea of having this aerial means of crossing is very good, but it has not worked well, because not properly fixed. Mr Adsett, bearing this in mind, will only hold to his generous offer it the work is carried out in a proper workmanlike manner, to the satisfaction of the Board's Engineer. Therefore, it is that we are glad to hear that Mr Lucas, our warden, will attend the public meeting on Satnrday next at the Pohangina School, when this and other kindred subjects will be discussed. Our farmers are commencing to buy for the future dairy factory. Mr C. Hunt drove up a fine mob of heifers to-day. The committee of the Ashurst-Pohan-gina Hack Racing Club are going to plough up the saddling paddock, level it, and sow down in grass. There is to be a meeting of the Committee on Friday to draw up the programme. A meeting of the parishioners is to be held in St. Mary's Church on Friday next, to appoint a vestry and discus* other important matters connected with the newly-formed parish. It is hoped that all will attend.
