Manchester Road Board

The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held on Saturday last. Present — Messrs F. Y. Lethbridge, (chairman) H. Booth, Pearce, Purkiss, Reeve, and Wheeler. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was received : — From E. Sanders, to the effect that J. Power had fenced in part of Lincoln street, Ashurst, to the detriment of the writer and others, and requesting the Board to give Mr Power notice to remove the said fence forthwith. From W. Rowley, asking permission to erect a verandah in front of his store at Ashurst. From A. Goldfinch, requesting the Board to increase Luie Hannagan's relief to 5s per week. From the following persons, requesting to be put on the rate roll : — Joseph Holland, in place of J. P. Hennigan ; Angus Clark, in place of Donald Clark; Alexander Mair, in place of John Eustace. From P, Han lon, calling the Board's attention to the bad state of the road leading to his section in Ashurst. From Department of Lands, forwarding copy of the Governor's order re the constructing of the bridge over Oroua river. From the Palmerston North Hospital Board, asking for particulars of the rateable value of the Manchester Road Board I District. From Messrs Baker and Cooke, solicitors, Palnaecston North, applying, on j behalf of Mr J. Lning, of Colyton, for £'60, t damages sustained by him on 2oth May last, owing to the defective condition of Menzie's bridge. I From Richard Hark, requesting the Board to clean out the drains facing his ' property on the Feilding road at Ashurst. From Messrs Goodbehere and Richmond, calling the Board's attention to the encroachment of a certain road on Mr j Hugh Bnrrell'B property, and requesting ! the Board to state whether they were prepared to grant their client compensation, and remove the road to its proper bound- j ary. From Mr Sandilands, to the effect that this Board will have control of the Aorangi bridge when constructed. From P. Hutson and Company, of "Wellington, forwarding price list of drain pipes, &c, manufactured by them. GENERAL. A petition with 65 signatures attached, was presented from the ratepayers of Nos. 5 and 6 Wards, praying for a continuation of the Watershed road to Henderson's line. The Board promised to give the petition consideration. A deputation introduced by Mr W. L. Bailey, from the residents of Taonui and district, waited upon the Board to urge that the building of the bridge over the Oroua river at Aorangi be pushed on with the utmost despatch, and pointed out the great advantages which would accrue to this district by the erection of the bridge. The deputation then retired, and the Board promised to give the matter its consideration. Resolved, That a general rate of one half penny in the £, on the rateable value of all rateable properly within the Manchester Road District be hereby struck for the year ending March 31st, 1893, to be payable on and after the Bth day of August. Resolved, That the following names be placed ou the rate roll:— Alex. Mair iv

place of John Eustace, J. Holland in place of J. P. Hennigan, and A. Clark in place of J. D. Clark. Resolved, That the Chairman write to the Commissioners of Railways asking them to enlarge the goods shed at Feildmg. Resolved, That Mr Bauckbam be given permission to erect a verandah in front of his store as requested by him. Resolved, That Mr Power be informed that in fencing across Lincoln street he is acting in opposition to an order of this Board requiring all roads and streets in Ashurst to be left open, and that he be called upon to remove the fence at once. Resolved, That tenders be called for the construction of the Aorangi bridge. Resolved, That the charitable aid relief to Luio Hannagan be increased from 3/6 to 08 per week. Resolved, That the Chairman obtain a lawyer's opinion in the ''-matter of Laing's claim for compensation. Resolved, In reply to the petition of Mr Shepherd and the other ratepayers signing it, the Board regrets that it cannot at present take any action re extension of Watershed road, but will keep the-' matter in view. Resolved, That the payment for members attending meetings of the Board be at the following rates:— Within three miles no payment ; beyond three miles and under ten miles 10s; over ten miles, 15s. Mr Bray, Engiueer, informed the Board that he had visited the Onepuhi bridge, with the chairman of the Rangitikei County Council, and examined the damage done by the recent floods, and they considered that three groins were required to be put in, also a number of wire crates. The bank would also need to be covered with small trees, wired down with stakes. Accounts amounting to £280 were passed for payment and the meeting adjourned.
