Ashurst Notes
• [ PROM OUR OW> T CORRESPONDENT. | The Bishop of Wellington has lost no time in appointing a curate to the charge of the new parish of Ashurst, Bimnythorpe, and Pohangiua. The Rev. J. iVI. Devenish will conduct divine service in St. Mary's Church, Ashurst, on Sunday morning next. He will have a wide district to visit. Quite like the old days in England to hear the morning bell summon us to worship in the church of our fathers. A notice is posted in conspicious places that Mr Lucas, the Pohangina warden of the Kiwitea Road Board, will meet the residents at the Pohangina School House on Saturday, August 13th, at 3 o'clock, to talk over seveial important question, with them relating to the ward. The separation petition is all in proper working order, but so much clogged with red tape that it does not advance as it should. He has a word or two to say about that. Then there is the question several residents have raised, as to the necessity for a light suspension bridge over the river. He wants to hear all about it and see whether it is a pom asinorum, or likely to be of real service to the wards interested. There is also a great deal to be said about roads. It is hoped there will be a good representative meeting of the ratepayers to discuss these important subjects. The chairman of the Wanganui Harbor Board Association, Mr Lucas, has received word from the Board's office in Wanganui that the Bill in charge of the Premier to authorize the Wanganui Harbor Board to despose of the balance of their unsold land to the Aasociation, is in a fair state of progress. The Commissioner has conferred with the Premier and Minister of Lands on the subject, and they have approved of power being taken to dispose of the balance of the block as the Wanganui Harbor Board propose. The Surveyor-General is engaged with the Crown Law officers in drawing up the necessary provisions, which will either be attached to the Act being passed through the House, or be introduced as a new Act.
