A Strange Story
A strange coincidence in related by the Hawera Star :— A Hawera gentleman one day recently was having a social glass with a friend in an hotel. A young man came up to him and asked if he was Mr So and So. Reply was given in the affirmative. 'Jhe young man then explained that his father had been murdered many years ago on the Harriet Beach, near Opuhake ; that he had just come from the , North for the purpose of visiting the scene of the murder. He understood that the gentleman whom he was addressing had been a resident on this coast for many years. Did he happen to have known his father, and where the murder took place ? The reply was, " Yes j I knew your lather well, and know all the circumstances. The murderer of your father is standing in front of you !" On the other side of the counter stood a couple of Maoris drinking, one of whom had been a notorious character in former years. Our informant states that it has been said the same Maori has on more than one occasion had his teeth in human flesh. The murdered man had £80 cash on his person when he was shot by the Maori. This, of course, was taken.
