High Jinks in a Canadian Parliament
M
The Ontario Assembly is one of the most sedate and business-like of bodies, and yet (says the Chronicle) we are told that its closing day last month was such as St Stephens never knew. As soon as the order paper had been cleared, an hon. member startled the House by rising 1 and giving " Auld Lang Syne" in lusty tones, the members, including Mr Speaker, joining hands in the orthodox fashion. Then another member moved, " That »he Attorney-General do sing us a song " Ihe AttorneyGeneral moyed an amendment, " To leave out all the words after % that,' and insert ' the Leader of the Opposition do favour the House.' " The Speaker duly put the amendment — " i hose that are of that opinion say v Aye/ " And so vociferous was the response that there was no need to call on the >( Noes." Just at that moment some resolutions came duwn from the Lieutenant-Governor, and the only song that the House indulged in was " God Save the Queen," sung with much enthusiasm.
