Arbor Day

♦ A half holiday is being observed in town to-day, for the purpose of planting trees and shrubs, in accordance with the Mayor's requisition to the citizens as previously notified by advertisement. Tree planting commenced at the State School grounds this morning, whore Mr Laird's present of a number of pinus insigms were planted by about forty of the pupils under the supervision of Messrs Carthew, W. G. Shearer, and J. Taylor, members of the School Committee, and Messrs Hill, Strachan, Scott, and Campbell of the school staff also assisting. Planting operations were commenced in the Square this afternoon. The following ladies and gentlemen sent presents of trees to be planted ; — Mrs Macarthur (sycamores), Messrs Lethbndge (planes), Dr Johnston (limes), Mr J. Elliot (sycamores), Mr Pharazyn (limes and plaDes). The first tree was planted by Mrs Johnston at the south west corner of the main road in Manchester street. Messrs W. G. Haybittle (Mayor), F. Y. Lethbridge, Edwin Worsfold, R. Garhck and others wore energetic in digging the holes, and worked hard f«r the success of the project. Of course there were a large number of spectators present.
