WELLINGTON, August 2. The Hon. Mr Ballance moved the third reading of the Wesleyan Methodint Church Property Trust Act Amendment Bill. Mr Sandford moyed an amendment that the Bill be referred to the Committee on Bills, with a view of considering the clause relating to an extension of the time in which a minister should remain in a district. He strongly opposed any extension beyond five years. After a long discussion Mr Sandford's amendment was lost by 81 to 24 and the Bill was read a third time and passed. A message was received from the Governor to the effect that His Excellency was unable to comply with the request of the House to furnish the correspondence between himself and the Secretary of State for the Colonies on the subjeot of the proposed appointments to the Legislative Council, as such correspondence was confidential. Replying to Mr Joyce, the Hon. Mr Ballance said he should endeavour later in tfce session to give an opportunity for discussing the Liquor Traffic Local Option Bill. Replying to Mr Mitchelson, the Hon. Mr Ballance said the Government had not sufficient information at their disposal to bring in a Bill to regulate the totalizator, but he thought the matter rested with the metropolitan clubs. The House rose at 5.30. The financial debate was resumed by Mr Buckland, Mr Valentine and Mr McGuire, and the House rose at 13.40 a.m. , -• August 3. The Hon. Mr Seddon moved that a Select Committee be appointed to enquire into and report upon the claims of old soldiers and Volunteers, the committee to consist of Hon. Mr Richardson; Captain Russell, Mr Valentine, Mr E. M. Smith, Mr C. H. Mills, Mr McGuire, Mr Lawry, Mr Joyce, Mr R. Thompson and the mover; three to be a quorum. — The motion was carried on the voice . , t The Minister for Agriculture moved: " That a committee be appointed to consider all matters pertaining to the agricultural and pastoral industries, with power to confer and Bit together with any similar committee, which may be appointed by the Legislative Council, >nd to a joint or separate reporf ;' the coinbiittee to have power to call for , persons, papers and recordi ; three to be a quorum. Committee to consist of Sir J. Hall, Mr T. Mackenzie, Mr Lawry, Mr Duncan, Mr Saunders, Mr Wright, Mr Valentine, Mr Mackintosh, Mr Carocross, and the mover." Carried, The debate was continued fey Messrs Wilson, and R. Thompson before dinner, and at 7.30 by Messrs Carncrossy Shera, Buchanan. . , The Native Minister commenced speak* ing at 11.20 p.m., and in the course of an excellent address said he had never heard such milk and water arguments adduced m a Financial debate as those which had been put forward by the ' members of the opposition this session.
