Kiwitea Road Board
♦ The ordinary monthly meeting of this Board was helrl on Saturday last. Present — Messrs Taylor, (chairman) Jones, Lucas, Bnrton. Homer, Shannon, Reid and Morton. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From Bank of Australasia re overdraft, agreeing to limit of .£2OOO. From Mr Poole asking for extension of J time for completing his contract on , ! Bryce's road, owing to the wes delaying the work. From C. McKenzie of Opawe asking to be placed on rate book in place of Donald McKenzie deceased ; also requesting payment for felling 32 chains bush on Pohangina Valley road. From Raugitikei County Council requesting the Engineer to meet their chairman to examine damage done by recent floods. From Secretary to the Treasury stating voucher for £470 payment of Kimbolton road farther loan was passed by the Audit. From S. J. Pitts, Birmingham, requesting payment of account. From W. W. Corpe, Makino, to be put on the rate book in place of J. Whisker for property at Pohangina. From the settlers on the Otamakapua block requesting continuation of bridle track. From W. Bailey, Taonui, enclosing account of £2 5s for felling bush at Pohangina. From Mr Calvert, of Rata, requesting to be put on rate book in place of A. C. Ashcroft, in the Onga District. From A. Munro, re expenditure of thirds on Mcßeth's road. From Auditor General, returning balance sheet for year ending 31st March, duly audited. From Mr Ritztnann, of Pemberton, requesting the Board to see that Messrs O'Connor and Bielski clear away the trees felled across the Mangoria road. From E. Nix, Apiti, requesting to be allowed to fell bush on the Upper cross road on sections 22 and 23 Block 7. From J. Hopkins, Pobangina, calling attention to drain being choked up and water running over his section. From C. Frankhauser, re forming road to his section at Pemberton. From Arthur O'Neil, re felling bush at Ongo and Apiti. From G. F. Smith, enclosing account £8 14s for felling road line fronting his section. From J. Henley, enclosing account of £3 3s for felling 22 chains on Foxton Small Farm Association. From P. McConnell, re road to his section at Feilding Block. From J. P. Larsen, asking to be put on rate roll in place of F. W. Welford, for property Ongo, Survey, District. From Younger and Laing, requesting amount paid by them for sending — Jobson to the Wanganui Hospital — £1 14s. From F. W. Welford, enclosing account for felling 9 acres of road line at Ongo £14 12s 6d. From Paymaster-General, stating £470 had been paid to Board's account. From A. Cameron, requesting to know cu3tom re felling bush on road line. From Secretary Palmerston Charitable Aid Board, requesting rateable value of Boards District. From W. E. Wisdom, re felling bush. From the Treasury Department, stating the special order for rate of £2765 loan for roads in Ongo Ward required 4 weeks public notification, also the £2765 loan for roads in Sandon Block required 4 weeks public notification. From Lands and Survey Department, stating the Board ought not to have deviated the road along Signal street without obtaining Government sanction and calling the Surveyor General's attention to the fact, as the Government found part of the money. From the Secretary, Department of Agriculture, stating that it had been decided to observe the 4th of August as a public holiday in all public offices throughout the colony, for the purpose of planting trees and shrubs in suitable public places and reserves, and in private grounds, and for the observance of a demonstration suitable to the occasion. GENERAL. Proposed by Mr Taylor, seconded by Mr Shannon, That the Engineer and Mr Jones meet the Chairman and Engineer of the Rangitikei County Council, re the Onepuhi bridge protection works. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Homer, seconded by Mr Taylor, That tenders be called for a sft. track on the east of Mangoira road, from the end of the present formation on section 28, to the end of felled bush on section 24 ; also that the slips be cleared off and culverts put in, and the balance of money be spent to the best advantage in doing permanent work. Tenders to be called as soon as the work is appro yed of by the Land Board and the money in hands of this Board. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Lucas, seconded by Mr Burton, That John Henley's and Walter Bailey's account for bush felling on roads be paid. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Burton, seconded by Mr Reid, That Edward Nix, A. Cameron and W. E. Wisdom be permitted to fall their road lines as requested on the Board's usual terms, which are not exceeding 30s per acre, to be paid when the Board has funds in hand. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Shannon, seconded by Mr Morton, That Andrew's and Kellow's, tender for printing balance-sheet be accepted at 30s per 200 copies. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Lucas, seconded by Mr Burton, That the names of Charles McKenzie be placed on the rate roll in place Donald McKenzie, deceased ; A. A. McDowall in place of A. C. Jenson ; and W. W. Corpe in place of J. Whisker. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Homer, seconded by Mr Morton, That the Engineer have the trees cleared complained of on the Mangoira road unless Messrs O'Connor and Bielski do so at once, and that the Secretary give them notice to clear them directly.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Shannon, seconded by Mr Morton, That O'Neil have permission to fell the bush fronting his sections on the Board's usual terms. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Burton, seconded by Mr Reid, That G. F. Smith be paid for his road line when the Ward has funds. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Shannon, seconded by Mr Morton. That the following names be substituted on the rate roll— F. W. Welford in place of J. P. Larsen, and A. C. Ashcroft in place of A. S. Calvert. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Homer, seconded by Mr Morton, That the request of settlers signing petition to have their thirds spent on the Spur road be granted, and that application be made for the amount due, and tenders called for the work as soon as the money arrives. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Morton, seconded by Mr Homer, That B. Pool be given au extension of time of two months from this date to complete his contract on Bryce's road, and that he be requested to push on with the work as quickly as possible, as at present the road is blocked.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Reid, seconded by Mr Burton, That Messrs Lucas and the Chairman, be authorized to arrange with the Bank of Australasia for the overdraft of £2000 already applied for, and that the Chairman and Mr Williamson be authorized to sign cheques with the Treasurer (Mr E. Goodbehere). — Carried. Proposed by Mr Reid, seconded by Mr Morton, That the tender of R. McKay for £76 for making 110 chains of bridle track on the Pakihikura road be accepted, and that the promissory note from C. Bull
and others be held until thirds come to hand for payment of the work. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Lucas, seconded by Mr Bnrton, That Mr Jones interview Mr Johnson re road diversion and to arrange with him for a sum for compensation not to exceed £60. — Carried. In view of the financial difficulties of the board. Mr Reid gave notice of motion to rescind the resolution to advertise in their Martou Mercury. Resolved, That the following tenders be accepted:— B. Pool, for Kivvitea Cross road, at 16s per chain, and Finnis road at 19s per chain ; fencing Birmingham cemetery, Madden, L 29 17s 6d. Also, that of Conley and Marsh conditionally that Messrs Bell and others send the secretary a guarantee that they will advance the money in case the thirds do not come to hand at the time the contractors have finished their contract and the Waste Land Board consent to the expenditure. The Board passed a number of accounts for payment and adjourned till Saturday, August 6.
