• - The Manchester Rifles paraded on Thursday night for inspection by Lieut. Col. Newall. There was a good muster, thirty-two men being present and considering the wretched state of the weather, those members who came in from the country deserve ever commendation. Lieut. Kirton was in command. When the corps was being inspected- one man was fined 2s 6d for having a ditty rifle. The Colonal then proceeded to instruct the men in the new drill, he also gave them lessons in musketry and firing exercises which were very interesting, and obtained the best attention of all ranks. The system of Colonel Newall is undoubtedly a good one, because e^ery man in the ranks is questioned at to what has been said by the instructor and therefore inattention is made, almost itopossible. Before the parade was dismissed Colonel Newall complimented the men on their soldierly appearance, they being smartly dressed in their new Kharkee uniforms, and well set up men of good physique. He said that Colonel Fox would visit Feilding sometime in August, therefore he hoped their clothing, arms and belts would be clean and well kept so that the corps might present a soldierlike appearance and be a credit to Colonel Newall and the officers of the corps. The election of Dr Sorley as honorary surgeon of the corps was confirmed. The next parade will be on Thursday the 28th instant. •■
