Ashurst Notes
[ FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT, j We have stuck to the colors we carried when our late member was representing the constituency, and have given a majority to Mr Bruce. There are a number of small farmers throughout the Manchester Block, who voted for the Opposition candidate although it was thought by the other side that they would support the Ministry that has reduced their (outside) imperial taxation. We have to thank the three papers that have the principal circulation in the electorate — the Star, Advocate, and Times, for showing the interior of this taxation business — that the farmers will have to pay more iv the end, than under the old Property Tax, what with the tax on mortgage money and increased rates to make up for the withdrawal of the subsidies from local bodies. A Pohangina farmer speaking of the probable dissolution if the Land Bill does not pass, says that he hopes it will not take place till the small farmers have had to pay this extra local taxation, then he says we ought to have every farmer with us. School attendance still low, 90 out of 223, and the examination coming on. Night classes are being held to coach theni on a bit.
