Wellington. The uame of the Saint honored has not transpired. The Hon. J. C. Richmond, a former Native Minisier, has resigned his position as a member of the Legislative Council, Captain Edwin telegraphs: — Weather forecast for 24 hours from 9 a.m. to-day — Warnings for westerly gales have been sent to all places. A Teutonic friend was asked this morninK how he felt after the election. He replied "I feel like some owls which have boiled himself." We think so too We have received from Mr H. F. Jannings, the Feilding ngent, a catnlosue of garden and field seeds issued by Messrs H. C Gibbons aud Co. of Wellington. We have received a copy of the Illustrated Muorilantier published in Wellington. It is well printed and well ad verlised and has therefore v bright future berore it. The committee appointed to arrange details for the Feilding Chamber of Commerce are now preparing their report, which will be submitted at an early date. The chairman of the Colyton School Committee, Mr it. Lankshear, gives notice that the school will not be reopened for another week in consequence of the alterations for the new building. Our Masonic readers are reminded of the Installation of officers in the Feilding Lodge on Monday next. Tickets for the banquet may be obtained from Mr Car thew, Mr T. W. K. Foster, or Mr Morey. At the Palraerston Hospital Board's meeting last Thursday, the Chairman stated that the yaluations of the Manchester Block had been increased from ] £400,000 to £571,000 at the recent valun tion. Messrs Cob be and Darrngh to»day announce a great clearing sale during July and August. The firm has made large purchases in the Home markets and they are reducing the stock on hand to make room for the new shipments. Mr Guinness, M.H.H., believes New Zealand suffers from too much local 'goyernment. In Westland, with a popu ktion of 8000, there are forty local bodies and 280 officials. But, then, Westland is not New Zealand. One of our " Liberal " contemporaries says the " Edwards case cost the ratepayers of the colony £800." No men» tion is made of what Mr Edwards lost through accepting an appointment in good faith from the " ratepayers of the colony " represented in Parliament. It is the intention of the Government to do something in the direction of appointing experts to grade flax, butter, cheese, and other agricultural produce exported from the colony, provided always that the said " experts " are " the right color " and haye been duly regis* tered and braDded at the Labor Bureaubays the Hawera Star :— On the day the Goyernor and Lady Glasgow nrrived in Wellington a boy was run over and killed by a tram, and the result of a visit and enquiry into the case is that' the Earl has decided to assist the poor frmily by a donation of £100. Whilst canyassing. he knocked at a door, and a woman appeared. "Is your husband in ?" he asked. Wife : "No sir ; but I know what you want. Mr husband is sure to vote for you, because you got him off for stealing the gun." Candidate: "No, no, alleged stealing of the gun !" Wife : l< Alleged be bothered ! We've got the gun in the house now." The collapse of credit in Melbourne, consequent on the failure of so many banks and building societies, is well hit off in a picture in the Melbourne Punch of a recent date. An elderly Gentleman has purchased a paper from a newsboy. ' What !' he exclaims, ' let you take threepence away to get change. Can I trust you ?' The indig* nant youngster retorts : 'Can you truts me ? What do you take me for— a blooming building society or a bank. We wish to call the attention of the residents of Feilding and district to an advertisement which appears m another column from Messrs Wool ven and I s is* bitt, who have taken over the old established business which has been so long and succesfully carried on by Mr Henry Eutherford in this town. We heartily wish these gentlemen every success in their undertaking, and have no doubt they will meet with the support of the Feilding residents so liberally accorded to their predecessor. Henry George has been " hoist with his own petard " and he doesn't believe so much no«v as he formerly did in the " universal distribution of property." Five jears ago a New Jersey man left him £6000 to be expended in the pron pagation of bis vieivs on the land question. The will was disputed, and the lawyers have now eaten up the bequest except £120 for which Henry is still smug his own attorney. This is rough on George perhaps, but the lawyers have enly practised what George taught — an« nexation. The annual stock-taking sale at the Bon Marche, Palmerston North, is now proceeding. The firm are determined to reduce their present stock at least £2000 previous to the annua! balance, and prices have been made accordingly.
