Manchester Road Board

The monthly meeting of the above was held on Saturday last. Present— Messrs Lethbridge (chairman), Booth, Pearce, Beeve, Purkiss, and Wheeler. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. correspondence. Letter from Mr Jas. Laing, Ashurst road, stating, that, as he was driving over Menzies bridge on 25th May, owing to a defect in (he bridge, (a loose plank) his horse took fright and bolted doing damage to the extent of £10 which he requested the Board to allow him as compensation. It was decided not to recognise this claim. Letter from Mr Jas. A. McCrea, of To Borangi, declining to make any reduction in bis claim for compensation for land required by the Board for road purposes. Letter from Chairman of meeting held at Bunnythorpe on 30th June, requesting the Board to take into consideration their request for the Engineer to take measurements, and make estimates as to cost of filling in ditch or culverting the same, . with a view to forming better approaches to sections opposite railway line for about 5 chains ; also that the Board be re- . quested to instruct their Engineer to get a cnlvert put in at once iv front of Messrs Tremewan and Slipper's places of business in order to avoid accidents. James, of Ashurst, requesting permission to erect a hitching post in front of his shop. Letter from Mr Hemmingsen, of Shannon, stating be had sold his property to Mr Jos. Holland, and asking his name to be put on rate roll. , - Letter from Minister of Agriculture, forwarding the Board a copy of "The Small Birds Nuisance Act," and urging on the Board the necessity of strong measures being taken for the destruction of the pest owing to the serious losses sustained by farmers. Letter from Mr Little, of Makino, stating that obstructions on Taonui road consisting of heaps of railway sleepers were still unremoved. Letter from Chairman^ of Bunnythorpe ratepayers requesting the Board to fix a date to meet the Bunnythorpe committee -^Ht&d Manawatu Boad Board, re handing over the^road on the south side of railway lino at BunHythorpe. Letter from Land anU-lucQ«%aJ?ax Department, enclosing declaration form for Board's signature under " The Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act " when the subsidy for 1891-2 will be due to the Board. Bequest from Audit Department for payment of M 13s 4d, amount due for auditing the Board's accounts. Letter from Land and Survey Department, to the effect that tbe proclamation will shortly be issued for a bridge over tbe Oroua river at Aorangi. Letter from Land and Income' Tax Department, stating that Valuation 801 l for the district had been forwarded to the Board. Letter from Mr W. J. Port, of Ashurst, to the effect that he had sold his place to Messrs Arthur Bros., and asking the name of the latter be put on the rate roll. Letter from Mr D. Munro, of Wanganui, to the effect that he could supply pipe moulds delivered to Feildiug for £28 10s 3d. From Audit Office, returning the Board's accounts duly audited to 31st March. Proposed by Mr Booth, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That A. Conway, and B. S. Pudney be placed on the rate book as requested. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Reeve, seconded by Mr Booth, That Mr James be given permission to erect a "hitching post " in front of his shop in Ashurst.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Reeve, seconded by Mr Booth, That Mr Didey be given permission to erect a verandah in front of his shop in Ashurst. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Keeve, That the Engineer be instructed to visit Bunnythorpe and enquire into cost of the work required to make cvi verts &c— Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, that in reply to Mr Shepherd's request, that the Board should acquire the land and continue the promotion of Watershed road through Mr Greenborongh's property, the Board regret their inability to do this work. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Booth, seconded by, Mr Lethbridge, Tbat notice be given of a rate of |d in the £ on all property within the Board's District for the year ending tbe 31st March 1893, the said rate to be payable on and after the Bth day August 1892. The rate book will be open for inspection on and after Friday 22nd July.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Booth, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That the following special rates be collected No. 6 Ward £, No. 5 Ward _, and the old special rate £d in the £.— Carried. ' Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That the tender of John McColl of £68 for the Penlope road be accepted, and that Mr Young's deposit be forfeited.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Booth, That H. Palensky's tender of £40 for the formation of Pearce street be accepted. — Carried. Tbe Boardlpassed a number of accounts for payment and adjourned till next meeting. _
