The Rev Mr Lyon in the chair. The chairman introduced the subject and contended that the idea of compensation had never been recognised either in New Zealand or elsewhere, other than in Victoria, where it did not work well. The idea of compensation was, he argued, prepostrous. Mr J. 0. Thompson after an able address on the subject moved the following resolution, which was seconded by Mr J. Gould in a forcible speech */ That this, meeting emphatically protest against the Bill now being brought before, the House of Representatives with the object of granting compensation to publicans for the nou renewal ofstheir licenses, the publicans having no legal claim nor has compensation hitherto beeu granted iv New Zealand." The resolution was carried by acclamation, and it was decided to eoud a copy thereof to be put before the House of Representatives. At intervals during the evening the choir, under the conductorship of Mr \V. G. Shearer, rendered some sacred music very pleasiugly. The meeting concluded with prayer. \ / -=r- -
