Birmingham Notes

[from our own correspondent. I The Secretary of the Kiwitea Literary Society informs me that he has received first rate returns from the members of the society in reply to his request to them to take part in the entertainment on Saturday night, so that we may look forward to spending a very agreeable evening — remember no charge ! All invited ! No tickets required. I see that the Kiwitea Licensing Committee have promised the two applicants for Hotel licenses at Peuiberton, that if the houses they have agreed to erect are considered by the police to be in conformity with the Act, that they (the bench) will grant a license for each house. The question then arises if Pemberton can support two hotels, Feilding should have at least twelve, Cheltenham four, and Birmingham six ! Perhaps some one will apply lor a license at Peep o' day ! We hope the Member who will be returned for the district, will not forget the " telephone " from Feilding to this town, and the finishing of the road to Pemberton, will have a top line in his notes, and also that the work will be done, not talked about only ! Would it be too much to request the Kiwitea Road Board to have the deep ruts in the road irom Major Moore's to Mr Lockyer's put into good order, or there may be a heavy bill to pay for damages to passengers for loss to horses and carriages. Perhaps they are not aware of the state of the road so this note may be of service, as when an accident takes place they never seem to know that the road was bad. Winter has set in, in due regal fashion I snow, hail, and wind.
