Fire in Palmerston North

On Sunday morning there was another disastrous fire in Palmerston North, the flames from which were distinctly visible in Feilding. We are informed by the Manawatu Daily Times that the alarm was given about 2.50 a.m., and when the Fire Brigade arrived on the scene the fire had a good hold of Mr Sorwall's and Mr Montague's building's. By the splendid exertions of the fire Brigade, and a snd. den change of the direction of the wind, the fire was conquered. The shops of Messrs Colville and Derrington, Salmon Cook, Olsen, and Wickett and Co., were cleared out in a short time by the Salvage Corps but it all suffered considerable damage. The following is a complete list of the losses and insurances Montague stock £1,600 insurance £400, building owned by Mrs Hoe £550 insurance £300, Sorwall and Sons, building value £400 insurance J9350 ; stock value £600 insurance i! 300, Colville and Derrington, stock value £200 insurance £200. James Salmon, stock value £350 insurance £200, Cook, stock value £300 no insurance ; loss £25. Olsen, stock value £200 no insurance. Estimated loss £50. Messrs Wickett and Co., stock value i-2500 in. surance £1000, damage to goods by re* nioval £1500. The greatest sympathy is felt for Messrs Montague and Sorwall in their great loss. The services of the Fire Brigade received the highest possible praise. Cobbe and Darragh Have imported a big lot of English blankets and raft ß They have also received a full assortment of colonial blankets direct from the makers.
