MR BRUCE AT CHELTENHAM.

The yery rough weather of Saturday. night no doubt deterred many from, turn*; lug out to hear Mr Bruce give his views: on political matters at Cheltenham. la spite of this there was a fair attendance.,: Mr Law was voted to- the chair. Mr Bruce, after referring in a few feeling wordg to the cause of the present election during which he paid a high compliment to the late Mr Macarthur, touched on the various political questions of the day on all of which he declared himself opposed to the present Government. On the question of Female Franchise be said he was opposed to it in theoiy, but that in practice he would rote for it provided that a clause was introduced to enable women to vote by way of the po3t office. He was opposed to assisted emigration of any kind, as he had always maintained that population was not necessarily a cause of strength to a country, and it must be remembered that we had some thousands of young men growing up iv the Colony who would either have to get land here or go to other countries to work for it. In answer to a question, Mr Bruce declared himself opposed to any interference with the present system of education, which he declared was one of which he should be proud. „ ....... Mr Mills proposed " That a hearty vote of thanks be given to Mr Bruce for his address, and as he objected to votes 'of confidence he would fiad they would show their confidence in him by returning him at the election." Seconded by Mr Perry and carried by acclamation. On the motion of Mr Bruce a vote of thanks Id the chairman wss carried and the meeting then dispersed.
