"Cake and Apron Fair "
An entertainment called a "Cake and Apron Fair " was held in the Foresters' Hallj on Thursday evening last, under the auspices of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. The attendance was j yery large, the building being packed, but there wore very few gentlemen present. There was a good demand for the articles offered for sale and the amount realised would be a very acceptable addition to the funds of the society. During the eyening musicial selections were; nicely rendered by the following ladies and gentlemen : — Mrs. Caldweli and lylrs Corry, pianoforte duet ; Mr Kitchen two violin solos ; Mrs Giesen and Mrs Lissatnan, vocal duet ; Mr Shearer, song ; Miss Learj , pianoforte solo ;.Mrs J. C. Thompson, song; Misses Leary and Giesen, pianoforte duet ; Mr Eade, song ; Mrs Giesen, soug. Mr F. Y. Lethbridge explained the object of the. society, which was a crusade against the liquor traffic, and also to obtain woman suffrage. A petition in favour of -the latter, to be ! presented to Parliament during the coming session, was exhibited and was said j to be ten yards long, containing the signatures' of ladies on this coast ouly. Mr Lethbridge also announced that the next j entertainment would be a. ■' Bun and Tie j Fair,-' and that gentleman were admitted to the Union as honorary members. Miss Giesen ably presided at the piano, and Mr Shearer had charge of the programme. The officers and members of the W.C.T.U. are to be congratulated ou the success of their efforts to provide an evenings enjoyment. Mr J. H. Stevens thanked all those who assisted and the National Anthem brought a pleasant evening to a close.
