Goodbehere, clerk of the plaintiff Board, gave evidence, and was' crossexamined : It appears that a receipt for , rates had been given to defendant, but by mistake 1892 had been entered thereon instead of 1891, but the block in the re- > ceipt book showed the latter date only, and the rates had not been paid for 1892, , though the butt of the receipt stated that , the receipt was for the two years named. Charles Sherlock, the defendant, dei posed to having paid the rates for 1891, ■ and 1892. The reason he did not see the clork about the receipt was that he could , not find it in time, and as he could neithei , read nor write he did not notice the dates he had made no mistake in having paid the rates for the two years. Both counsel briefly addressed the . Court His Worship referred to the Bating Act, and held that the defendant was not ; liable. Judgment for defendant accordingly. J. Hislop yB. Hislop ; claim £7 12s 6d. Mr Sandilands for plaintiff, and Mi Richmond for defendant. The claim was for wages. B. Hislop vJ, Hislop ; claim, £2 for a loan. Mr Richmond for plaintiff, and Mi Sandilands for defendant. The plaintiff, defendant, and one or two other witnesses were examined, and cross-examined, and both counsel addressed His Worship, after which judgment waa recorded iu the first case for plaintiff for £o 18s lOd, and in the second case for the amount of claim, each party to pay bis own costs.
