The Helena Bay Murder
LPSE UNITED PBBSS ASSOCIATION^' Auckland, June 1. The charge against Robert Butler for the wilful murder of Arthur Kettan, at Helen Bay, was taken in the Supreme Court this morning. The prisoner pleaded not guilty, asserting that the act was done in self defence. Jacob Myer deposed to prisoner coming to his blacksmith's shop at Hikurangi and telling him that he (accused) had had a fight with Kettan. Prisoner said he met Kettan on the bush track, and they walked together for some time on friendly terms, until Kettan turned round and said, " This is the place ; we'll settle matters at once." Butler then said thatKettau stabbed him three times m the breast, and then he (prisoner) drew his reyblver and shot Kettan, firing two or three shots. Butler complained to witness about 23 months ago that Kettan stole £150 from him one night when they stopped at Mr Foot's. Prisoner said to witness that he did not inform the police of his loss because he could not speak English, and was a stranger ; also that' Kettan was in poor circumstances, and that when he got in bettor circumstances he would return the money. The case will not be concluded till tomorrow. This Day. A verdict of wilful murder at the trial is expected this afternoon. . .
