Feilding Patent Case
A case of considerable importance to inventors was before the Registrar of Patents all day yesterday. On the 26th February last Messrs Belk and Parr, of Feilding, coachbuilders, obtained provisional protection for a patent for constructing four-wheeled vehicles so that they can be driven round sharp coiners safely, and on the 7th March before Belk and Parr filed a complete specification of their inyention, Mr J. Bartholomew of Feilding applied for a patent for an invention entitled ' A sixth wheel cross action for vehicles,' and filed a complete specification, the invention the subject of Bartholomew's application being identical with that of Belk and Parr. The case came before the Patent Officer on Belk and Parr opposing the grant of letters patent to Bartholomew, and the main ground relied on is that no new invention is contained in Bartholomew's application, the subject matter thereof having been published and described in Belk and Parr's application before the date of Bartholomew's application, and that Bartholomew's title is misleading. Mr Jellicoe appeared for Belk and Parr, and Mr Gully, with whom was Mr Prior, of Feilding, for Bartholomew. After the examination of several witnesses, including Mr H. Hughes, a patent expert, the case was adjourned until Saturday. — Times.
