' ■ The Bishop of Rochester presented and supported a petition to Convocation praying that museums and picture galleries should be opened on Sunday. At a great gathering of the railway employes in Hyde Park, a resolution wis passed demanding shorter hours and better pay for men iv service throughout the United Kingdom. In the course of his remarks Burns urged that railway men should have a large representation in Parliament, and said the companies were treating (be men shamelessly in practising economy in fcheir respective services. He declared the length of hours the men had to work hnd been the cause of an enormous number of deaths and accidents, while thousands of men were only paid starvation rote wages, and actually had to exist on the tips thtj received. The authorities received warning from Paris that the attempt was to be made. The undermining of the palace extends for seyeral kilometers. London, Mny 16. Sir J. F. Garrick, Agent-General for Queensland, in a letter to the Times states the people of England may rest assured that the Colonial Government will fearlessly and rigidly enforce the revised rules regarding the employment of Kanaka labor and that new safe guards will render recruiting as free of evil as the importation of coolies. The Times, commenting on the letter, believes there is no possibility of repetition of the Hopeful black birding case, yet Queensland had incurred very grave responsibility and a statesman is bound to fulfil his promise as to safeguards against a repetition of the former abuses.
