Volunteer Items
There is a parade called for Thursday next but as there is " a circus " on the same night it is very doubtful as to which event will possess the greatest charms. A sporting volunteer offers two to one on the circus— with no takers. Liiut-Colonel Fox, the nenr Comman* dant of the Defence Forces, is busy making himself acquainted with the defences of Wellington, and he informs us (N Z. Times) that he has found the guns and fortifications to be in good order. On Tuesday he was at Fort Ballance, and on Wednesday he visited the battery at Ngahauranga as well as the Magazine, while yesterday he went through the depot and barracks. He hopes to see the Volunteers unofficially this week and next at their parades. At present he is awaiting the arrival of the Minister of Defence, and after conferring with Mr Seddon he will proceed to Auckland, subsequently visiting the station in the South Island. Ho will not begin his formal instructions until he has made himself acquainted with local conditions.
