It is reported from London that Mrs Osborne was released from gaol on Friday, and that her condition is critical. It is announced in Londoa that an autobiography of Sir Heury Parkes will shortly be published. The Toronto Globe asserts that Thomas McGreevy paid the Quebec Tory Ministers and their friends nearly £100,000 in excess of contracts, and states that in the event of the Government of the Dominion shirking an enquiry, it will publish the whole story, in the hopes that it will result in a trial before the Court. The German Government consider that the British colonies have a right to the benefits of the favoured-nation clause in the commercial treaties. The fire in ■ lie Central Theatre, Philadelphia, was caused by the clumsiness of a scene shifter. Six persons are reported missing, and of those injured six are dying. The widow of the late W. Aslor of New York, is left an annuity of £100,000 the daughters are left £400,000 each, and the son £12,000,000. In the House of Commons Dr Clarke has moved that England, Ireland, Wales ond Scotland should be allowed to legislate on domestic affairs, leaving the Im perial questions to the House of Com. mons. The motion was defeated by 20 in a small House. The Melbourne Cabinet has adopted the new Railway Commissioners' scheme of retrenchment, by which it is calculated that £300,000 a year will be saved. Mr Wilson, of the London Standard, in an article in the Investors' Review, declares that the entire fabric of Australian civilization is built upon debt, and that the spectacle is not equalled anywhere. The colonies must introduco borrowing for increased production under pain of early bankruptcy. 'They must, however, borrow only a moderate amount because they are uuable to pull up in mid-career, and must pay very different terms than formerly. He concludes by saying if the colonies all adopt Protect tion soon they will be unable to borrow or pay.
