Cricket

A cricket match was played on the Oroua County cricket ground yesterday between a team from Hawkes Bay and the County Club. In the evening the visitors were entertained at a banquet at Hastie's Hotel, which was served in excellent style, and a most enjoyable evening was spent by those present. Following are the scores : — Hawkes Bay.

A matter which hns probably escaped attention is the absence of shipping re> ports as to damage by lightning. Formerly when wooden ships were rigged with cordage, there were numerous cases recorded of vessels having been struck by lightning with destructive results. What with increased size ot hulls and consequent lengthening of masts, it might reasonably have been expected that there would hare been greater risk, as the tapering masts arc calculated to attract the electric discharge. It is suggested that the immunity is accounted for by the Fnct that most ships have jvire ropes, which serve as conductors for lightning travelling along the wire, through *he iron hull, to the water. No instance can be found where a vessel so rigged has been struck and damaged unless the conducting circuit has been iv some way interrupted.
