Volunteer Items

The attention of members of the Manchester Bifles is particularly directed to an advertisement which appears elsewhere. From the Government Gazette of the 7th instant we learn that No. 67, Sergt. J. J. S. Hunt; Newton (Auckland) Rifle Volunteers has been dismissed tho service for breaches of " the Defence Act 1886." Major W. S. Tisdall, who served during the Waikato war, and who was for several years past Government Auditor at Parnell, died suddenly this morning at Parnell from an apopletic seizure, aged G2. He was auditing the Parnell Borough Council accounts yesterday afternoon, when he took a fit and never recovered consciousness. Deceased joined the Waikato regiment in 1865, and subsequently joined the Armed Constabulary. The following case should prove of interest to Volunteers in this district. At the E.M. Court, Rangioni, near Christchurch, a few days ago, Samuel Green and Thomas Hill, members of the Rangiora Rifle Company, were charged, on the information of Captain Heluiore, with having committed a bread) of the 109 th section of the Defence Act in being, through irregular attendance at parades, returned as non-efficient, and failing to earn the capitation allowance of L 2, Captain Heluiore proved the offences, Hill appeared, and stated in extenuation that after joining the corps he removed to Ashley, and his employment did net permit of his attending drill. The Bench pointed out that he should have applied for his discharge. A fine of L 2 and 7s cost was inflicted in each case.
