Volunteer Items
.0. Major Douglas, who was in command of the camp during the recent Rifle Championship meeting at Trenthatn, draws attention to the fact chat no distinction is made between I officers and men, and no attention I paid to dress. He considers that if Volunteers appear at all at meetings ! of this description they should be in I separate lines in camp from the civilians ; that the practice of officers j and men living and messing in the same tents should be forbidden, and that some power should be given to the officer in command for, if necessary, enforcing military discipline. At an informal meeting of the Manchester Kifles held on Thursday evening the question of attending the proposed encampment at Wanganui at Easter, was considered. It was clearly shown that as the men had given up all hope of an encampment this year, many of them had made arrangements which could not now be altered, therefore the proposal could not be entertained. The team picked to fire against Marton on Friday next (Good Friday) are the following :— Lieut. C. Bray, Sergt. Evans, Vols. Scott, Stevens, Humphries, Aitken, Haywell, Parker, Evans, (iunr) Act.-Segt. Lethbridge. Emergencies— Vols. Petherick, Hopkins, Basaett, and Lieut. Kirfcon.
