The Wesfe Coast Times hints that Mr Seddon will be the next Premier, and Mr Ballance will replace Mr Perceval as Agent-General. To»morrow the libol action G. Hut chison v. Edwards, the honorary secretary of the Sandon Racing Club, intends to recommend to the Committee of the Club the holding of a second race meeting in the spring, and thenceforth to hold two meetings a year. He has lately had the course harrowed and sown down with grass, and it will soon be in splendid trim. — Advocate. The lleefton Guardian says that when a lady gets a red spot on the end of her nose the world charitably remarks that her blood is out of order ; but just let that red spot appear on a man's nose, and everyone will declare they smell whiskey as soon as they get twenty feet off him. The inference to be drawn from this statement is that they sell very bad whiskey in lleefton. A private telegram from Danevirke informed the Standard yesterday that Mr Walter Haybittle had tho misfortuuo to dislocate his shoulder when out riding. We understand that the question of a daily postal delivery in Feilding has not yet been definitely decided, and there exists a possibility that the concession may be granted. Captain Edwin telegraphs: — Weather forecast for 24 hours from 9 a.m. to-day-Telegrams to expect strong northerly winds after from 12 to 20 hours have been sent to all places southward of Napier and New Plymouth. A Wellington man said the other day that if a Civil Servant was seen speaking to a member of the staff of an " Opposition" paper he was reported, and was sure- of a " wi^gins*" from his official superior. This is " rough on the poodle." Mildura (Australia) has a population of 1400, and is a Prohibition town. A recent visitor there states : -" I saw not a loafer all the time I was there, neitlier did I see a drunken man, although I am not insane enough to say that there is no drinking there." The Presbyterian Anniversary Tea will be held in the Foresters Hall, Boweu street, to-morrow evening. A congrational meeting will be held afterwards when addresses will be given by various ministers. A full attendance is expected as the most ample preparations have been made for the repast. Music will be supplied by an efficient choir. A local coai and timber merchant received twenty £1 postal orders from London, accompanied by a slip, on which were written the words, " This belongs to your father's estate." News from Blackall (Queensland) states that hundreds of men are seeking employment, and offer to work at any rate of vra»es to enable them to exist* The local storekeepers and stations are severely taxed bj giving rations away. As the stations are shearing in rotation, the men will not be able to find employment There are too many in the district for the work required to be done. To-day we publish the programme of the great vocal and instrumental concert to be giyen* in the Assembly Rooms on Friday next in aid of the Wesleyan Church building fund. The bill of fare is a most attractive one, and among the performers aro many old favourites of deserved popularity. It will be noticed that the prices of admission are exceptionally low. A fatal accident occurred at Kai Iwi, Wanganui, on Saturday at 5.30 p.m. A youth named Willirm Bullock, about 18 years of age. whilst tending a threshing machine, slipped, and getting one leg in the drum of the machine, the limb was horribly mangled right up to the knee before he could be got out. It was three hours before the doctors could reach the place, and when they saw the injuries it was not thought adyisable to amputate at once. The mangled portions were removed on Sunday, but the youth died on Sunday night. A curious marriage custom is recorded by Dr. Post as existing in Southern India among some of the more primitive nonAryan race. This consists in wedding a girl to a plant, a tree, an animal, or even to an inanimate object, the notion beinjj that any ilKluck which may follow an actual marriage will be averted by a union of this kind. The first " husband," acting as a scapegoat for the second, the superstition wliich forbids the younger s;sters to be married before the elder ones is set aside by the eldest daughter marrying the branch of a tree, after which number two may safely cuter into the bonds of matrimony. A sample of what newspaper proprietors have to put up with in the absence of a just libel law. At Broken Hill, the other day, a publican named Walsh sought to recover damages from the ' Silver Age ' for having described his premises as a "dirty hotel." The newspaper published the evidence of the local inspector of police, who stated that the hotel was one of the filthiest and worst conducted houses on the Barrier. It was such a disgustingly dirty place that a black- fellow would not have allowed it to get in such a state. Judge Gibson said that the publication of the paragraph was not an abuse of the pnyilege of a newspaper, and the plaintiff was nonsuited, with costs, Tanekaha bark is now an important and valuable article of export to England, where it is used for dyeing and other purposes. Most of the tauekaha bark ex« ported from Auckland is brought down from Hokianga aud other districts in the North. The tanekaha is a small parsleyleaved pine, seldom growing higher than 30 feet, and grows in many of the forests of the North Island in considerable abundance. The bark affords a red dye, which is now coming into general use in Knc;laad for the purpose of coloring kid gloves, and for other uses. Tho tree is more frequent in the forests of the Northern districts of Auckland than in any other locality in the country but is also found in considerable quantity iv the bush of the Bay of Plenty. A meeting was hold last Friday ovcuing in tho Foresters Hall, Feilding, to form a branch of tho Woman's Christian Temperanco Union. Mrs Shopherd and Miss Kirk, delegates from Chnstchurch and Wellington, gavo interesting addrosses on the work and duties of its mombors. The attendance of ladies intorostod in tlio causo was yery fair, botween fifty and sixty being present, a number of whom expressed their wish to becomo members, and we think tho promotors have every reason to congratulate themselves on the success of their undertaking. Mr W. V. Eves won ovury tie in the American lawn tennis handicaps at Kensington, defeating Mr Ekanshaw. Liout. Bray, of the Manchester Rifles, left for Wanganui to-day to pass his examination for a commission. Tho examining board will sit to-morrow. We have been requested by Mr Tnrublo to state that his Halcombe stock sale is postponed until Wednesday, the loth I inst, at 2 p.m. If possible, arrangements will be made ! to present the testimonials to Mr and Mrs ' Peter Bartholomew, on Tuesday 12th instant. The books will arrive in the Arawa which should reach Wellington tomorrow. An intertamment will be licld in flic Foilding Assembly Rooms on Easter Monday night in aid of the Feilding Football Club. We understand the secretary, Mr R.. H. Whisker, is making every effort to make it a brilliant success. The advertisement is published elsewhere. We notice Mr Trimble will hold a sale of furniture, etc. at Mrs Hastie's sample room on Tue?day, the 1 2th, where the goods have been removed for the oonvenieuce of tho public. As evory thing is to be sold we expect to see a large number of buyers present. A yery satisfactory rehearsal was held at the Wesleyan Church last evening, under the conductorship of Mr R. F. Haybittle, in connection with the forthcoming concert to be held at the Assembly Rooms on Friday, April Bth. Upwards of 42 performers were present. Another practice will be held at the Assembly Rooms on Thursday night nest, at which a full attendance of performers is desirable.
