The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, APRIL 5, 1892.

If we may form an opinion on the subject from the number and success of the private concerts we have lately had in Feilding, we should say that a strong Philharmonic society could very easily be formed. At one time there was such an institution in Feilding but from a variety of apparently unavoidable causes, it died out. The leaders left the place, or the sopranos got married, or the bassos took to lawn tennis or football ; and even some of them fell away from grace and retired into matrimonial life. But these things will happen in a properly regulated settlement like this, and conductors have simply to submit to the inevitable. At the time we speak of the population was very limited, and there were but few voices available j while now we Lave amongst us a very large number of young members of both sexes who are the happy possessors of good voices, capable of being cultivated to great excellence. Under these circumstances, therefore, we think that anyone who made a movement in the direction indicated would more than probably receive both encouragement and support. The main difficulty is to obtain a competent conductor, but that is surely not insurmountable.

The following are the traffic returns for the Napier-Taranaki aection for the four weeks ending 27th February, 1892, and the corresponding period in 1891 :—
