At three o'clock the men were paraded for the championship. There were only a few spectators present, among them being the Minister for Defence. After the men had drawn for targets they were inarched to the firing points at 700 yards. Most interest was centered on Nos. 7 and. and 10 targets. On the former Pornell (who was a tie with Spiers) and Jones: were firing, and on the latter Doughty was placed. "When each had" fired five shots the relative positions were—Purnell, 495 j Doughty, 493} Spiers, 492; and Jones, 491. In his next three shots Doughty only registered four, haying had a miss, while .Purnell put on ten and Spiers nine. With his last two shots Doughty brought up the white disc on each occasion, and he was first to finish,. with 31, making a grand total of 509, Purnell, with 505, had yet two shots tofire and he looked like winning, but both times he made outers, and then Doughty and he were ties. Purnell and Doughty then laid down to fire off, five shots to be fired at 700 yards. Doughty scored 16 and Purnell 11, the former thus winning. The following are the details of the Champion Match : — Sergt. Doughty (Auckland Artillery) 31 ; Champion Rifle Belt, gold star, aud £35 . . 509 Major Purnell (Wanganui), 30; silver star, and £25 .. .. .. 509 Private F. Jones (Waikari), 32 ; silver star, and £20 . . ... . . 507 Private Spiers (Oamaru), 27; silver star, and £15 . . . . . . 506 Private A. Rallinger (Wellington), 3* ; £10 505 For the Bifie Cup in the District Match which followed, McCallum (Auckland) made the possible at 500 and 600, and thus won the Magazine Rifle presented by the Hon. the Defence-Minister.. March 18. It has been discoyered that there was: no tie between Purnell and Doughty for the Championship, as the former hadl been credited with 27 instead of 26 at the* 700 yds range in the grand aggregatematch, which gives him a total of 508, or a point behind Doughty. The Union Company's Cup, was decided this morning, Doughty being again top, Jones second, and Spiers third.
