Feilding Borough Council

♦— Monday, Mabch 14. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held yesterday afternoon. The Mayor (Mr W. G. flaybittle), Crs Lethbridge, S. J. Thompson, J. C. Thompson, Cartnew, and Sandilands were present. A letter was read from Mr Wollerman re his application for permission to make an excavation in the footpath opposite his new hotel in Manchester Square, to give access to a cellar. Mr Wollerman waited on the Council. He guaranteed that no inconvenience would be caused to the public by such opening. He instanced Falmerston North where hotels had similar openings in the footpath, and no evil consequences had arisen nor had any complaints been made. The Mayor supported the application, simply on the ground that it would be unfair to let one hotel in the town have such an opening, and yet refuse it to another. , Councillors Sandilands, Lethbridge, and Chamberlain also supported the application. Cr J. C. Thompson said he should oppose the application as his principles would not allow him to vote for anything connected with the bar of a hotel such as a beer cellar. Anything connected with the accommodation of the hotel he would support. The Mayor informed Mr Wollerman that this was merely an informal meeting when nothing definite could be settled, but his application would be favourably considered at the next regular meeting of the Council. Mr Wollerman thanked the Council and withdrew. Abtesian Well. The matter of the artesian well was then introduced by the Mayor when Cr Carthew said that the contractor for the work, Mr Marten, had offered to make a fresh start and sink to the depth of 120 feet for the sum of £50. If water is obtained before that depth be reached the £50 still to be paid, and if water be not struck at that depth all payment to be forfeited. Cr Carthew informed the Council that Messrs Macarthur, Wollerman, Cobbe and Darragh, had offered £5 each and several other citizens would make up £5 if required, towards the cost. After the subject had been discussed conversationally it was proposed by Cr Carthew, seconded by Cr S. J. Thompson, That the Mayor, Crs Sandilands and the mover, be a committee to make arrangements for continuing the sinking of the artesian well, the committee to be empowered to spend a further sum af L3O. — Carried. The meeting then adjourned.
