Appalling Condition of Russia
The Cologne Gazette has received information from St Petersburg, bearing date of January 11, that the reportß from the famine-stricken districts describe the situation there as more distressing than ever. The medical men lament the terrible mortality among children. . Typhu3 in its worst from is raging in many districts. The authorities have forbidaen the press to publish any news about this state of things. The migration of the starving peasantry to the large towns increases the danger of infection. The Russian newspapers are denouncing in unmeasured terms the continued adulteration by dealers of the corn and flour supplied to the 'public, an adulteration which is alleged t» have been carried on to the extent of 50 per cent.
