The Ararchist Outbreak in Spain

An Anarchist attempt to sack tae town of Xeres was reported on January 9. According to the Madrid correspondent of the Standard, the authorities at Seville, Cadiz, and Xeres bad recently observed an increase of agitation among- the Anarchists in the town of Xeres, Arcos, and Lebnja, and information sent by the local authorities led - them to believe that some disturbance would take place, and on Friday night the authorities arrested sixty-five Anarchists who >were lodged in gaol at Xeres. This no doubt irritated the Anarchists, who sent emissaries through the country around Xeres, inviting the rural Anarchists to strike, and on many estates the men acted upon these instructions; At half past eleven o'clock on Friday Dight (the Bth) pome bands ©f Anarchists, armed with sticks, scythes knives, and firearms, appeared in the streets shouting '• Long 1 live Anarchy !" and " Death to the burgesses." They barbarously murdered a wine- merchant and other persons in the streets, and divided into throe groups each 150 strong, they made a futile attack upon the prison, ; to liberate their companions who were shouting inside. Others Anarchists attacked the barracks, but were easily repelled, dispersed and pursued by cavalry and infantry, who captured 70 of then. Meanwhile another band had attacked the Town Hal], where the principal, authorities were assembled ; but the Civil Guard, nightwatchmen, and police kept; them at bay until, being joined by the military returning from the pursuit of the second band, the assail ants were utterly routed. The whole affair passed off so rapidly chat in two hours the town was cleared of the assailants, whom the cavalry pursued into, the country, and captured many, including some wounded men and the supposed authors of the murders. The Anarchists cut the telegraph lines and plundered several farms, from which they cook the horses and mules, before entering Xeres, where they expected to be joined by their fellow- Anarchists and the prisoners in the gaol, with a view to attack the rich people who were attending at the theatre. The prisoners have boldly confessed that they they intended to sack the town and kill the leading burgesses. One Anarchist was killed and several wounded in the streets. The town was in a state of panic.
