Mr Carthew's New Residence

♦ The residence recently erected for Mr Carthew in Derby street and which he has just taken possession of, is a very handsome structure, and reflects great credit on all the contractors who haye carried out the work in the vanbus.departments, from the architect to the painter and paperhanger. The area covered by the main building is 48 feet x 36 feet, with a scullery and pantry attached at the back ; there is also a wood shed, etc., 28 feet x 10 feet at a distance of 22 feet from the house. The house is square built with a verandah in front projecting 6 feet on both sides of the house, and in the centre there is a very handsome porch. The front door opens into a hall 6 feet 6m x 16feet 10in, which is continued to the bathroom at the end of the passage ; at this end the width of the hall is 5 feet. The bedrooms are on • the left hand, the front one being 14 feet x 16 feet, three others are 12 feet x 10 feet. On the right hand there is a sitting room 16 feet x 15 feet 10in<; the dining room and the kitchen are each 16 feet x 16 feet and all the bedrooms are scrimmed, lined, and papered, and are bordered with a very nice polished skirting board, The front room is completed with a gold cornice and contains a very handsome mantle' piece and a panel registered grate. The walls in the diningroom are papered, and the ceiling is lined, moulded, and painted, . with Bin architrave. The kitchen is daydoed with oilcloth, which gives it a very nice appearance ; the roof in the kitohen is similar to the diningroom. The ceiling of the hall and passage is lined, moulded, and painted, with a .heavy BuY architrave, with an arch dividing the two parts ; the hall is daydoed 3ft 6in high ; the doors throughout are the best ever seen by the architect. Mr 0. Bray performed the duties of architect with thorough satisfaction. Mr W. Heald, the contractor, carried out the work in his well known efficient manner, and Mr JFowles completed the work of painting and paperhanging. The proprietor has expressed great satisfaction with his new acquisition, and states that the house is a very comfortable one.
