Mr Thomas Poynton, who settled in New Zealand long before this country became a British colony, and lived at Hokiauga when the Treaty of Waitanga was signed, has died at his residence at Lake Takapuua, at the age of 90 years. March 11. Mr William Carruthers, who arrived in the Colony 50 years ago with two brothers at Wellington, died at his residence, Kamo, yesterday. He was aged 80 years. Ashbuexon, March 11, A threshing machine hand. James Chalmers, aged 27, single, was killed at Chertsey last night. He had taken off the feed board to clear away loose straw, the cn Igine still going on, when he stepped into the drum. His leg was torn from his body at the hip, and he passed through the machine. He survived nearly six hours, and died at the Ash burton Hospital. Chbistchurch, March 11. This morning a lad named George Goldsmith, aged 14, was gored to death by a bull on Mr Napier's farm, Wairiri Valley, in the Malvern district. Napieb, Maich 11, A youth of 14 named Thomson was drowned at Petane to-day. He was sent to throw something into the river, and must have leaned on a stump overhang ing a deep pool, for the stump was found displaced, and the boy's body iv the water.
