Manchester Road Board

The ordinary meeting of the Manchester Eoad Board was held in the Board's office on Saturday, the oth inst, Present — Messrs Lefchbridge (chairman). Purkiss, "Wheeler, Reeve. Pearce, and Downes. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From Alex. Bell, stating that he was agreeable for the Board's cleaning out the creek, providing a good outlet was made for the water. From Samuel Clare, giving notice of his intention to fall bush on road hue. From 0. Hunt, Marton, calling attention to the unfinished portions of the Watershed road, and asking for information about same. From Alex. Bell, requesting the Board to instruct contractor for clearing the Kimbolton road, not to destroy his fence when burning the logs. From W. A. Sandilands, requesting that his name be placed on the valuation roll of the Manchester Eoad district in respect of section 14, J. From Eangitikei County Council, giving statement of annual expenditure on the Onepuhi bridge and requesting payment of Board's share £41 4s. From Treasury, statement showing the amount received by the Board under the •Government Loans to Local Bodies Act to 31st January, 1892. . From Charitable Aid Board, asking the Board to state what amount of Charitable Aid; the Board required. From Pahiatua County Council, enclosing cheque for £14 6s 4d refund of tolls collected at the Manawatu Gorge, January 1892. From Robert Cobb, agreeing to pay •one half the cost of connecting the water courses on hia land into a largo drain along the front of the terrace, also to indemnify the Board for any damage which anight accrue. From Treasury, Wellington, requesting the Board to give prompt attention to the payment of the mteiest on the inscribed debt of the Board, amounting to £636 12s sd. GENERAL. A deputation waited on the Board with an application to permit the closing of Harrison's road. The Board could not consent to the closing of the road, but would consider an application for permission to erect a gate thereon. A petition was receiyed bearing the signatures of Mr 0. Jeffries and 6 others on the Upper Taonui road, asking the Eoard to cause the road opposite their respective sections to be cleared of the jouag growth, which had grown up since the line was felled, also of the stumps and logs which now interfere with the driying of mobs of sheep or herds of cattle. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That the Board agrees to iall the undergrowth on Taonui road as requested by Mr H. C. Jeffenes and •others providing that the petitioners burn at at their own risk.— Carried. Messrs Lloyd and Kirkpatrick waited on the Board in reference to the making of Henderson's line, Stoney Creek. They livedan the Manchester Board's district, tut the road would be in the Manawatu Board's district, they estimated it would cost £T0 to complete tbe -work. The chairman of the Manawatu Board had promised to assist in the making of it. Proposed by Mr Downes, seconded by Mr Reeves, That the Board offer the Manawatu Board one-third of cost of trimming and metalling the ■whole of the unformed portion of Henderson's line, proyiding the total cost to the Manchester Board does not exceed i£2o, and that the work be done by the Manawata Board within three months. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That Mr Sandilands 1 name be placed on the rate roll for section 14 J, Manchester Block, in place of Mesdames Brown and Coker. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Reeves, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That the Engineer make arrangements for carrying the drain through Mr Cobb's property in accordance with Mr Cobb's offer. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Reeve, seconded by Mr Downes, That Mr Brewer and Mr Clare have permission to fell bush in Stanford street, Ashurst, as requested in their letters, on the Board's usual terms. Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That the Engineer be authorised to get copies of the deposited plans of sections situated on Forlong's road between the Oroua river and Kimbolton road. — Carried. Mr Reeyes raised the question of wages received by the roadman hi his district. The amount now paid was 6s per day, and it was necessary he should keep a horse to ride to and from his work. On account of this he thought the man was entitled to some consideration. The members thought it was understood that a workman in the country kept a horse for his own convenience. This amount was the standard rate of wages paid by the Government and other bodies, 80 that no advance could be made. Proposed by Mr Eeeve, seconded by Mr Lethbndge, That the tender of Mr Pringle for Whibley's road, and that of Mr Ashworth for the dog tax be accepted by the Board ; but that tenders for the Penelope road are too high. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Downes, That the Engineer bave the foot bridge over the Makmo on Mackay's line painted.— Carried, Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That the dog tax for the present year be as follows : for all sheep and cattle dogs up to three owned by one man 2s 6d each, all other dogs 10s each, and the Clerk arrange with the collector as to the registration of a suitable place for the office. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That the Engineer haye Waituna road as far as Mr Anderson's, made passable and if possible metalled.— Carried. The monthly accounts to the amount of £435 Os lid were passed for payment and the meeting adjourned.
