Ashurst Notes

(from our own correspondent.) There was a meeting of the school committee on Tuesday night. The master's report showed the roll to have increased to 231. Of this number 171 only attend (average). This shows that there are 60 who aro irregular in their attendance. Manifestly unfair to the teachers oi the school, because you know if a child fails to pass the inspection, the parents don't remember this slack attendance in the early weeks of tbe term, and so blame the teachers for that which is really their own fault. Had education to he paid ior it wonld be so valued that parents would see their children got all the instruction they could, hut now that it is free it is not valued (by many) as it should be — one of the greatest of the many boons this favored generation is receiving. Among the correspondence was a notice from the Board as to one-third of its members retiring, and letters from Mr Fry offering himself for re-election, and from Mr Wilks, of Feilding, as a new candidate. A letter from the Secretary of the Education Board accepting the committee's choice of Miss Prendergast as assistant teacher. Mrs Charles' account was passed for payment. Reference was made to the crowded state of the school.
