Volunteer Items

The Manchester Bifles will parade for drill and inspection on Thursday next. The disbandrnent of the Auckland Engineer Company of Volunteers is threatened, as their uniforms ordered from Home have been detained by the Customs authorities for the payment of £52 duty. The same charge was made on uniforms imported by the Manchester Rifles, but the latter did not make a fuss. Application was made for a refund of the duty in the proper form, and the money was re-paid with very little unnecessary delay. Lieut. Kirton has received a circular trom the Defence Office to the effect that the Defence Minister, after consideration, has decided that the Volunteers in the Taranaki, Wanganui, and Wellington districts, will not take part in the Encampment proposed to be held afc Nelson at Easter.
