«. (PER UNITED PRKSS ASSOCIATION^ Cheistchubch, February 25. The Hon W. P. Reeves, Minister of .Tufcttce, addressed his constituents tonight. In the course of his speech he explained the reasons for the abolition of the Native Department and the appointment of Mr Carroll, and alluded to the Legislative Council appointments, contending that the Government, under certain circumstances, had a right to swamp the chamber. The speaker alluded to the good work done by the Minister of Lands in the way of settlement, and touched upon several other interesting topics during the delivery, and at the conclusion of his speech Mr Reeves was warmly applauded, and a vote of thanks and confidence was moved by Mr A. Loughrey, and earned unanimously, and cheers were giyen for the Government. Nelson, February 25. C. Remnant and party, after a tramp 12 hours, reached Motueka from the River Crow, a tributray of the Karamea beyond the Baton, and showed gold they had obtained, induing a piece 9oz 7dwt. They complain of want of tracks, stating that they had to tramp over snow ranges, each man carrying 801 b. Gold has pre* yiously been found in the Crow, but the inaccessibility of the country has pre* vented operations. Auckland, February 25. Five men were fined at the Police Court to»day for having been stowaways on the Mararoa, from Sydney. The counsel who appeared on their behalf stated that they were almost in a state of starvation when in Sydney. Masterton, February 26. At Ekatahuna to-day, Harrison and Smith were brought up on remand, and charged with the murder of John Dalton. Most of the evidence given was similar to that adduced at the inquest W. Skey, Government Analyst, stated that he had examined the articles sent to him, and found blood on the shirt only. He could not say how long it had been there, but it appeared to be recent. Both of the accused were committed for trial.
