Correspondence

AN EXPLANATION. TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sm— Your correspondent who signed himself " Fair Play," must have felt that he had a bad case when criticising in such a spiteful manner my report of the meeting held to arrange for a visit of the Premier to Feilding, otherwise he would have attached his true name to the letter. Now, as to the wording of the requisition. The copy I saw contained the words, " For the purpose of giving an address on the policy of the present Government," and it was on this phrase, the local which so cut your correspondent, was written. At eleven o'clock on the day of the publication of the report and local Mr Beading telegraphed to our office that the requisition had be'en altered to read, " To give an address on the political topics of the day," and these words were then inserted at his request instead-of the former. Now it is sought to build up a charge of misreporting on the alteration referred to. I have no wish to enter into a correspondence concerning the original and revised requisition, but wish to say only this: that my report of the meeting was true, and contained no misstatement ; and in support of this assertion I am prepared to refer the matter to arbitration, and lose a deposit of £5 if found guilty of misreporting the meeting if " Fair Play " will also deposit £5 and lose it if his scurrilous attack is proved to be false. , I am, &c. S. Andbew.
