Manchester Road Board
■ ■ . , ■ — ♦_ The ordinary meeting of the Manchester Road Board was held in the Board's office on Saturday, the 6th instant. Present—Messrs Reeve, Purkiss, Wheeler, Pearce, and Downes. Mr Wheeler was voted to the chair. The minutes of the previous ordinary and a special meetiug were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From Robert Lyon, senior, making an offer to deliver metal for repairs to the road from Warne's mill to. the.juncj^g.n.of the Kiwitea Road Board DistticYaif 2s"oa^ per cubic yard. From H. Reeve, Bunny thorpe, appfioaV tion for slaughtering license for section No. 6, Btoney Creek. From "W. McCulloch, protesting against the payment of two tolls on the Gorge road, after seeing in the papers that the number of tolls had been reduced to one. (Left in the hands of the Engineer). From G. H. Rumble, asking permission to erect a verandah in front of his business premises. From Lands and Survey Department, stating that the Governor has been pleased to appoint Mr H. W. Brabant to hold an enquiry into the question of the bridge over the Oroua at Aorangi. From H. W. Brabant, on the same business. From Charles Wilson, manager of the Mercury Company, soliciting a share of the Board's advertising. In reply to a question from the chairman, the clerk said that all the Board's advertising was given to the Advocate, Stab, and Manawatu Times. After a few -words as to the expense complying with the request would involve, it was decided that the Board cannot increase its present advertising expenditure. % '- From Robert Cobb, drawing attention to the damage done to his property Jby the discharge from the outlet drain on the Ashurst-Palmerston road. Jackson, re. change" of name on rate roll. From E. A. Haggen and Coi,' Kmitecl, applying for authority to advertise schedule of toll charges. ' ' From Hospital Board, Wanganui, re collection of amounts due for maintenance of patients whilst in the hospital. From Claude Francis, re change of name on rate roll. " From A. C. Haycock, re 'change of name on rate roll. From District Survey Office, notifying receipt of the plan of McCrea's road sec* tions, Manchester Block/ the- same had been examined and approved. - . . GENEBAL. An application from Messrs Pftge,JKil- * patrick, James, and others from. Ashjorst, was received in reference to footpatWin front of their several . premises, and asking an offer in conjunction with the Board in order that the contractor might have some compensation for his alleged loss in constructing the same. r :-: Mr Reeve considered the Board should only be called upon to "expend equal amounts with the settlers.* !•::'•: ,A Proposed by Mr Reeve, seconded by Mr Pearce, That the Board agree to supplement by 5s per chain, the contnbu^ tion promised by the .Ashurst residents' in their petition, to be paid when the.residents have paid their share.— CarriM. Mr 0. Pleasants, accompanied by Mr F. Owen, waited.on the Board m reference to making the Penelope road. An application had been made to the Board some months ago and they would be satisfied if that work was earned out. Mr H. Thomas had access to his residence on sufferance only and now the bush was burned his track was being, fenced iv. They would prefer that end nearest the Spur road being made. ; Proposed by Mr Reeve, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That tenders be called for forming a bridle track from the Spur Road at the corner of section No 7, Penelope road.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Pearce, That the name of Henry Barnes be placed on the rate roll for sections 3, 4, and 5, Pohangina road, instead of Claude Francis. That the name of Minna S. Jackson for sections 11 and 12 Mugby Junction instead of the Colonists Land and Loan Corporation. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Downes, That the Engineer report at the next meeting, on the probable cost of removing the house for the tollkeeper at the Gorge toll to the place where the toll-gate is to be erected and that the chairman make enquiries as to the possibility of obtaining the Government house at the Gorge to form part of the new tollhouse.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Downes, That the slaughter license | for the current year be one pound sterling and that Mr Bray be appointed slaughter house inspector and that he retain the fees for his trouble. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Downes, That the Clerk call for tenders for the collection of the Dog Tax for the year 1892, — Carried. Proposed by Mr Reeve, seconded by Mr Pearce, That Mr Rumble, of Ashurst, be given permission to erect a verandah as requested by him, and that a slaughter house license be granted to him.—Carried. Proposed by Mr Reeve* seconded by Mr Purkiss, That tenders be called for the reforming and metalling the road from Pohangina road to the Feilding road. Tenders to be in by next meeting of the Board. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That a hand rail be placed on the bridge on the Makino Road opposite Mr Pilcher's, provided the bridge be in good repair ; otherwise that the Engineer report at the next meeting.-^Car-ried. Proposed by Mr Reeve, seconded by by Mr Pearce, That the tender of Younger and Laing for the removal of the toll gate and that of P. L. Behrenffor the formation of Durham street, Ashurst, be accepted. — Carried. The Board promised consideration of the matter, and the deputation •withdrew. After passing the monthly accounts the meeting adjourned.
