Pohangina Notes
[from our own correspondent.] Travelling round this district I notice that a number of people have taken advantage of the fine weather to burn, and have succeeded very well. One disadvantage to some of them was that the wind was in the exact contrary direction to what they wanted, which made it risky for their neighbors. On Wednesday last some hundreds of acres were burned, and now fencing and grass seed sowing are in full swing. I think this sowing should be left alone for a little while yet. In some instances here I have known seed to be sown three times over, through being in such a hurry. It stands to reason the ashes burn it up or destroy the germinating power. I think, Sir, you will agree with me it is a good thing people are not all of the Batne mind. Now some think that if you let the land lie for a bit, the thistles will take possession. I have no doubt they may to a certain extent, but I have never seen thistles interfere with youag grass if sown at the end of Autumn. I hope your readers will study and adopt this hint. On Thursday last I saw a team of horses attached to a wagon, at a standstill. I found the cap of one of hind wheels had come off and of course the wheel had slipped off the axle. If the vehicle had been loaded the consequences might have been serious. However with assistance the driver got the wheel on, jammed it with an old bit of horse shoe, and went away happy.
