(PBB UNITED PBEB* ASSOCIATION). Mastebton, February 4. An unusually violent thunderstorm passed over this district this afternoon lasting about two hours. Rain fell in torrents, and the thunder at times was very heavy, and the lightning fearfully vivid. It is reported from Opaki that one man was struck dead, another paralysed, and four horses killed. Dr Beard has gone out, and until his return no further details can be procured. February 5. The rumour that a man was killed at Opaki by lightning turns out incorrect. Two men were paralysed and six horses struck dead. Nelson, February 5. After mid-day the weather cleared, enabling tho Volunteer Beview to take place in the Botanical Eeserve, where the local and country crops assembled, aiong with a detachment of blue jackets from H M.S. Eingarooma. After vari* ous manoeuvres were enne through, the Minister of Defence addressed the men, congratulating them on their efficiency, i He thanked Captain Bourke for allowing his men to take part in the review, and mentioned that this was the first time the men of a new colonial warship had taken part in a shore demonstration. Mr Seddon assured the Volunteers that as long as he was at the head of the De« partment he would do all in his power to encourage the massing of Volunteers, as he considered it would bring the men to a high state of efficiency. Messrs Seddon and McKenzie visited the Orphanage to-day, and were greatly pleased at the manner m which the institution is managed. The temperance demonstration which was put off yesterday owing to wet weather, takes place in the Botanical Gardens to-morrow. The Jubilee celebrations are now practically ended, and visitors are leaving; Nelson in large numbers.
