One left as the steamer dashed into the wharf, but the other, named Laurenson, remained at his post. He was caught by a falling rail and was jammed among the debris, and his leg was broken badly. The injured man was removed to the hospital. Wanganui, January 27. Thomas Barnotfc, a well-known builder, dropped dead at his bench at 4.30 to-day. Alfred Sedcole Brown, of Maxwelltown, was killed at 5.30 this afternoon whilst bushfelling on his farm. Auckland, January 27. The New Zealand Herald publishes correspondence received from Tawhiao containing threats to take possession of land at Otiotu sold to Europeans. There is also a letter from the Hon. Mr Cadman warning any person interfering with Europeans in possession of land that he will be arrested. In reply to this, Reru Kaihau, agent for Tawhiao, declares that the latter is King of New Zealand. Palmerston North, This Day. Messrs Clere, Richmond, and James take first prize for plans for the Palmerston Hospital.
