Harbor Block Chips
» [FKOM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.! Through the culpable oarelessness of ■ one eccentric individual several settlers here have had their bush burnt almost as soon as it was felled. However, as good luck would have it, good burns resulted, so they have no great cause to grumble ; but one party had the misfortune to lose about twenty sacks of cocksfoot seed, and only by the most strenuous exertions was a valuable crop, estimated to yield 100 sacks, saved from destruction. The reckless* practice of firing rubbish out of season, in the proximity of felled bush, indulged in by certain mole-eyed and thoughtless persons, is a proceeding much to be condemned. Some very excellent burns are reported here, notably those of Mr E. Harrison, Mr R. Brown, Mr Philpotts, and Mr Rutherford, of Feilding. A considerable quantity of seed has been grown on the block this season, principally cocksfoot. Mr H. Sweet has a magnificent crop cut on his section, estimated to yield some two hundred sacks, and judging from the sample shown me it appears to equal the finest Akaroa seed, being entirely free from fog.
