Review
We have received from the publishing firm of Charles Begg and Co., of Dunedin, two songs for review. They areof local composition, and weare consequently glad to welcome any effort in this direction. The songs in question are entitled " The Scottish Emigrant" and "Tired Mother" — words and music by J. and M. Robertson, of Timaru. They are both easy and simple as regards the accompaniment, and the compass of them is well within that of an ordinary singer. The first, "The Scottish Emigrant," in E flat, commences with a short prelude, and as is only right in the eternal fitness of things — in the accustomed irregular time that characterises the Scotch music — and throughout there is an undercurrent of melancholy in the melody. This, too, is only natural and in conformity with the feelings of an emigrant. The " Tired Mother," in B flat, may have been more aptly termed " A Lullaby," as it partakes more of this character. It, too, is simple and tuneful. Both ought to be appreciated by the young singer as a pleasing addition to the repertory as they are simple, unaffected, unpretentious, melodious, and of average compass. The verses of both pieces are melodious and exceedingly appropriate, while the printing is all that could be desired, and reflects great credit on Messrs Begg and Co. We sincerely hope to see something further from the composers.
