«. . — . (pee united phess association). Dunedin, January 12. A deputation of the unemployed waited on the Mayor this morning. It was represented that upwards of a hundred men are in urgent need of employment, some having been idle for two months, and some had not had employment since they were discharged from general work at Catlin's river. Wellington, January 13. A man named John Portman was killed at Eketahuna to«day through a log roll" ing on him. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a man who attempted to stab Dr, Grace on Monday night. A man with whom the doctor had had a law suit some years ago visited him iD his surgery and demanded some money, and on being refused he drew a pocket knife and attempted to stab Dr. Grace in tho abdomen. The Government has asked Lord Kuntsford, Secretary of Slate for the Colonies, that the names of possible ap« pointees to the Governorship of New Zealand should be submitted to them before the filial selection is made. Auckland, January 13. Mr Admou Chapman, of Norman's Hill, Ouehunga, committed suicide at 1.30 a.m. He got a single barrelled rifle, and attaching a strap to the trigger of the gun and to his foot, fired the weapon and blew his brains out. Ho shot himself while in a state of temporary insanity, caused by domestic troubles.
