Investigations held into the affairs of the Land Credit Bank, one of the mstu tutions which recently suspended payment, disclose the fact that Taylor, the manager, his wife, and son were overdrawn in their accounts to the extent of Lll 4,000, while the securities are estimated at LII.OOO. Mrs Taylor's bill for L 43.000 is held, but its value is uncertain The shareholders of the Bank require to pay calls amounting from L 25.000 to L 45.000 to meet the liabilities. The Standard Building Society has called a mepting of its depositors. The statement presented showed assets equal to 358 for every pound of liabilities. The present action of Directors was not due •to pressure, but merely to give satisfac« tion to the clients of the Society. The management suggested that the deposits should be renewed for three years. December 16. At the annual meeting of the National Mutual Life Association of Australasia, the report showed a satisfactory decrease in the death claims, and on increase of funds to the extent of L 132,000. Sydney, December 15. The Early Closing Bill has passed through Committee in the Legislative Assembly. It provides that shopkeepers shall close at 6 o'clock on five days of the week, and 10 o'clock on Saturday ; compels them to provide their em ploy 6s with sitting accommodation, and to allow thorn an hour for each meal, and prohibits the employment of lads under fourteen years of age, and of Rirls under fifteen, if they have not passed the fifth standard.
