Joseph Waferhouse, lute accountant of the Commercial Bank, was to«day sen fenced lo four years' penal servitude for misappropriating the funds of the institution. In March last Waterhouse le* van ted from the colony and was subsequently arresttd in London. December <t. Messrs Hadfield, O'Neill, Low and Sydney, four directors of the Norlhum« borland Banking Company, were arrested to-day on a charge of conspiring to defraud. Melbotjbnk, December 3. The Metropolitan Bank annouuees that it must suspend payment, owing to tbe run by depositors. According to the balance-sheet to the end of June Ihe capital of the institution was a million sterling and the subscribed capita], L 650.000, of which L 389.000 was paid up. Tlio deposits amounted to L 835.000, and the reserve to LIOO.OOO. The amount due to other Banks was L 69.000. Other liabilities were set down at Loß,ooo, making the total liabilities L 1,481,000. The assets, including mortgages, 1,245,000, and freehold property, L 221.000.
