Correspondence

FEILDING FIRE BRIGADE. TO THE EDTTOR OF THK STAR. Sir, — In your report of the last meeting of the Borough Council, I noticed that Captain Morey, of the Fire Brigade, waited on the Council for assistance in putting up a shed for the engine. I was sorry to see that the Council could not do anything in the matter of assistance at present on account of their fnnds being very limited, but I was pleased to notice that the councillors were in favor of grantassistance, " providing they had been in funds*" with the exception of Crs Sandilands and J. C. Thompson. I think the remarks of the latter Councillor in reference to " nursing, and champagne suppers," and one or two other unfavourable comments made by him, but not reported, might very well have been spared. If Cr Thompson thinks the engine is merely a toy for the firemen let him go and pull his coat off and pump for an hour, and I think he will then change his opinion on the matter, rf the shock is not too great for his muscular system. If the firemen were deriving a benefit from the funds I should not then have objected to his remarks. Cr J. C. Thompson should remember, " if he thinks back a little." the valuable assistance he received from a number of the men now in the .Brigade when his dwelling house was saved from destruction. I only mention this matter as Cr J. C. Thompson was only asked to vote for or against the motion, and knowing the position of the Council he might have reserved his remarks. — I am, &c. Consistency. Feilding, October 6, 1891.
